Significant progress for security and freedom of movement in Europe
Karlsruhe, August 30, 2024: As an IT service provider, virtual7 is involved in the further development of the Schengen Information System (SIS), an important instrument for safeguarding security and freedom of movement within Europe. As a significant contribution to the implementation of the EU interoperability regulations, the company is helping to expand and optimize the SIS with modern technologies.
Optimization of the Schengen Information System
The Schengen Information System was created to compensate for the abolition of border controls within the Schengen area by pooling search information from all member states and providing the border authorities with relevant information. Previously, the SIS operated as an isolated system. With the new interoperability regulations adopted by the EU Parliament in 2019, the SIS will now be linked with other information systems, including the Visa Information System (VIS), Eurodac, the Entry-Exit System (EES) and the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS).
virtual7’s role in further development
virtual7 is supporting this comprehensive modernization process by developing and implementing the interface to the new European Search Portal (ESP). This central element enables the national Schengen systems of the Federal Police to efficiently access data from various information systems and thus optimize security checks and administrative processes. Our expert develops customized access components and sets up advanced proxy servers to ensure seamless integration. In close cooperation with eu-LISA and other member states, virtual7 ensures that the ESP prototypes are continuously developed and brought to production maturity. This guarantees robust and secure data processing and helps the federal police to perform their tasks even more effectively.
A balancing act between freedom and security
With the continuous progress of the Schengen Information System, a high level of data protection and security is ensured to maintain the balance between freedom and protection. The EU regulation guarantees that all data is processed securely and only used for authorized purposes. These developments strengthen citizens’ trust in the European security and border management systems and contribute to the high quality of life within the Union.
Added value created
The optimization of the SIS will benefit citizens. Millions of German travelers will benefit from safer and more efficient travel within the Schengen zone. The optimized integration of the information systems will increase security without restricting freedom of movement. Third-country nationals, such as guest workers and international students, will also benefit from optimized administration and safe travel within the Schengen states.
With its support, virtual7 makes a decisive contribution to the further development of the SIS and thus ensures significant progress for security and freedom of movement in Europe. Together with eu-LISA and the Federal Criminal Police Office, virtual7 is working to secure the future of modern and effective border management. This continuous optimization of the SIS is not only a step forward for the IT systems of the public sector, but also a significant contribution to stability and security in Europe.
